Who wrote and sent the first letter? Ha ha I cannot name this person and I’m sure you can’t either, but I do know that writing letters has been around for a long time. Though writing a letter may not be as time efficient as other means of communication it is more personal and in my opinion more exciting to read.
In its time the telegraph was an amazing invention. Using Morse code may not have been the most effective way to talk to someone, but back then they didn’t know any different. Now the telegraph is old news. As new technologies come out the old ones are long forgotten, but sometimes we see them again in new and improved forms.

The invention of the telephone quickly changed our world forever. We now rely on the technology of telephones for our everyday needs and wants and I believe they are truly one of the best inventions of all time. This invention can easily fall into the same category of which vehicles, computers and heating/ air conditioning also fall under. Do you agree? Our current telephone has gone through many changes to become what we know it as now. For instance there was the telegraph (which helped the idea of a telephone come about), hand crank phones, phone booths, house phones, cell phones, advanced technology phones and still others unnamed. Cell phones are so advanced that you can now get email and surf the web in just moments.

In 1973 Martin Cooper created the prototype for the first cellular phone. It weighed 2.5 lbs and only had the talk time of 35 minutes! (cellular.co.za) Sometimes we can see the beginning of a product and not the end. Though I wasn’t around at the time I still know how the telephone began and personally I do not think I will see it end in my lifetime either.
People have a lot to be thankful for when it comes to technology usage. Telephones in particular are so important to have in case of an emergency. On the other hand they sometimes cause the emergency. So many people use their cell phones when driving which can cause accidents and distractions. This negative effect is causing some states to make it illegal to drive and talk on the phone. We can only blame ourselves for these new laws. But then again how can we know if a phone call will create an emergency or tell us of one.

ReplyDeleteTechnology is great in many ways, but what a loss our great-grandchildren will have when they never get to discover a shoebox filled with old love letters detailing their their grandparents romance, or perhaps discovering an old invoice noting the how ridiculously inexpensive our times were. Text messages and e-mails just don't preserve our history that way. As technology changes we must constantly update things like photo file formats, etc or the file becomes completely inaccessible; that doesn't happen with a written document or printed photo. How history will be affected is yet to be seen.
ReplyDeleteLike Anonymous above, I worry that so much of what we're saying and writing in electronic forums will be lost for all time. Some of us are capturing posts and blogs in more permanent form and even capturing them as printed text. Still, much will be lost. Given much of the shallow and transitory nature of much of what passes for communication, though, maybe that loss is not such a bad thing. In terms of the use of the cell phone and driving, at least we will be quickly able to call for help when we text our way into someone's rear bumper or go flying off into a ditch.
ReplyDeleteHmmm... it is really interesting to see how much and how fast technology has changed. And it's also crazy to think of how advanced some of the old technology we now see as ancient and outdated was at its time.

ReplyDeleteyeah i hope it doesn't get out of control either...i kind of think it already is out of control. i do miss writing letters though. as i stated above it is really personal like in the movie Dear John. it's just precious to receive a letter and admire it over and over in their handwriting. i hope that never changes. :)
ReplyDeleteWell, not only has the continued advances in communication technology Left us completely vulnerable to losing all of our data describing who we are as a civilization due to one catastrophy..(hmm that sounds familiar)..but also it is causing the speeding up of time. Simply put, time is merely one's perception of events in a linear form...one event compared to the other. A long time ago if you wanted to relay a message to some one outside of your town, it could have taken months, now with modern tech it takes seconds or less. Now days the rate of information exchange has grown exponentially, thus causing the perception of time to change and seem as if the days are going by faster.

Health - Cell phones and other wireless technological devices such as wireless routers and cordless house phones emit a radiation called Pulsed Microwave Radiation...this is the same frequency that Microwaves use to COOK YOUR FOOD. This frequency ranges from 800mhz - 2.5ghz. It radiates outwards in all directions at the speed of light and can go through almost anything. Think about that when every direction you look in the city you see a cell phone tower. And make note of how many schools, churches and parks have cell phone towers on their property, because they are payed big bucks by the cell phone corporations. I could list the side effects of this radiation but my hands would cramp...but i will say this because it is so important...this microwave radiation DAMAGES YOUR DNA! By the way, if you wear glasses, they conduct the radiation energy around your eyes and it actually bubbles the lens of the eye and causes blindness.
The German Govt recently went public telling the people not to use cell phones because of how harmful they are. Other countries are doing similar things.
Privacy - Did you know that your cell phone has a special number that the govt uses to identify you just like the I.P. address on your computer? It's called your MSID#. Go through your phones settings and you will probably find it. It looks like a normal number, but it is not the number YOU need to call ME. My phone number is 814-746-7480...my MSID number is 814-504-****. Just like the I.P. number of your computer's internet connection, if you know what you are doing and have the resources to do so you could access every single thing on my cell phone as if it were in your hand. As a matter of fact, the other day when I was at sprint the guy working there gave me quite an insight to how this all works. Talk about mind blowing. And naturally, it goes much deeper and disturbing than i care to go into right now.
The bottom line is that cell phones are complete garbage. And although they have soo many perceived benefits....they DO NOT OUT-WEIGH THE DETERIORATION OF HEALTH AND PRIVACY.

all of this is very interesting and it is true we are living in exponential times, technology is doubling every month but has anyone contemplated the idea of telepathy? It might sound a little crazy but wouldnt this utilize our greatest technology of all? our brain? could this be in our near distant future? One can only hope but wonder why it is that we only use a small percentage of our brain, now I'm going to make the assumption that you have all piked up your phone at one time or another and already new who the caller was. How can this be? Well have you heard of the Christ consciousness grid? Did you know the govt. has been doing studies since the 70s. It all started when a group of researchers studying monkeys observed them begin to wash there potatoes off in the water before consuming them, once they witnessed this it started happening on other chains of islands near them. In a human study they took a picture with a number of faces on it when they showed the first group of testes the picture (and this is a couple hundred people) they all saw the same amount of faces, then they were all told how many there really was, when they continued the test in the country next to them with the same amount of people they all knew the correct number of faces! does this mean we already have telepathic capabilities? I believe so but in order to exercise these abilities we must first acknowledge that we have them. I can only hope that I live to see such a day were we live up to our full potential of star children that we are. Using all of our brain would change everything about us. Who knows what we would be privileged to and what we would be capable of. I can only assume we wont miss our dear cell phones.
